A Kay A Day in May is a swimming challenge I started a few years ago to try and get myself and others into swimming as a physical and mental exercise. Along the way I had fun creating the look and communications for the project.
I originally challenged myself to 30 days of swimming having heard that to absorb a talent you must do it for 30 days ( I think 'they' have since updated that number to 90 days). So I posted my progress on Facebook everyday so that I would have some accountability structure, and sure enough people would hassle me if I hadn't posted yet. Fast forward three years and I had gained a little crew that joined me on the swim. Being a designer, I felt that if I gave the project a 'look' and promoted it, people might also discover the joys of swimming through the challenge.
In 2018 I branded A Kay A Day in May and made an instagram, some posters and a minisite to see what kind of response that would gain. We got a couple of more participants, nothing world breaking (which taught me as a designer that there is more involved in project management than just making something look cool) and word spread on social media.
Being able to do my own design and branding was a great freedom. As a result I 'under-designed' the project and often felt like it was all to easy being able to please myself as a client.
